Competing in sports is highly psychological
If you don't have the psychological makeup to compete to win and/or don't have the desire to train, you will flop at almost every sport.

I ran with a guy who could run a 1:55 800 meters with very little training, but when it came time to practice he never showed up. He had all the gifts in the world to be elite, but he didn't want it. He had other priorities and it was enough for him to show off his talent on occasion. I've also come across players who were mental midgets and they just didn't get "it" and seemingly didn't have the capacity to grasp what it would take to become great.

Talent is simply not enough.
