While sports (BYU sports) has been seen as a missionary tool for the Church, the Church does not exist to promote sports
The Church exists to save souls and bring those souls to Christ.

When the Church had the opportunity to purchase UVU for pennies, they declined as the cost to run the Church's educational system is staggering. I believe it was Elder Packer (I could be wrong) who then stated the reason the Church did not purchase UVU is the Church's mission is saving souls and not necessarily education. He went on to speak about the upkeep costs for just the campus grounds, let alone buildings, salaries, utilities, insurances, etc.

No, the Church won't fund BYU's sports nor should it. It has nothing to do with the ALUF or the other suggestions you mentioned.

I love sports...I played sports and made a living doing so. I support BYU's sports as a Cougar Club member (high level) and we attend BYU's home games and away games.

Fans need to do their part in start giving what they can to the program and stop pointing fingers to the Church. I remember when members (as wards and stakes) had to raise funds in order to build chapels and Temples - if the members didn't do their part, so be it. Let the Church focus on the mission Christ set forth and let BYU fans step up and do their part.
