There are many subjects where the pay is enough, combined with the lifestyle, to
generate plenty of qualified applicants. For those subjects the question should be how to get them to perform well and if better pay (or a different pay structure) would help draw and retain more motivated people.

For STEM subjects there is just an enormous disconnect between a teaching salary and what they could make elsewhere, and the lifestyle isn't enough to bridge that gap. For them better pay is a really good option.
