BallisLife Walk-on
My Religious affiliation & Passion for BYU dont intersect. My experiences & past
I know a few BYU fans from a distance and no utah fans so I dont understand the bitterness. I grew up watching Ty Detmer & tried to be like him as a young athlete. traveled to Utah with friends to 2-3 summer BYU basketball camps in HS under coach Reid & also watched televised games with some friends that liked and later attended BYU. My state school sucked and BYU pounded them twice in my youth so I thought BYU was a good alternative and its where some of the smartest kids at my HS went to college. I was given a chance to play at BYU by coach judkins when he recruited for the men's team after his Utah years but only as a preferred walk on, and declined and decided to play with a scholarship at a lesser public school (as my family had no resources to help with school). Those interactions cemented my love for BYU. I'm now a legacy donor to the athletic department and follow them across the globe. My faith or lack of a specific faith don't determine who my favorite team is...that is just dumb.

I feel like BYU fans feel like all other BYU fans are mormon...but why? I never thought that about BYU growing up just like I don't think that about Notre Dame or Gonzaga and catholics or Baylor and Baptists. Why do mormons have that stigma about themselves I ask? It honestly has made it hard at times using all the mormon euphemisms and odd inner circle language that they assume everyone knows what it means. As a whole I don't think most BYU fans realize how exclusionary they are to others... it makes it hard for a random guy to just like BYU just because. My friends and associates that aren't BYU fans feel the same and think that all BYU fans are judgy and why would I like them... And there is some truth to that. Oh and please don't use the words "members" If you're not from utah or mormon i'm not sure many know what that means...and it sounds very high brow and overly snooty.
