Just my guess

Surgery centers place a premium on efficiency. My guess is that something happened that caused your delay, which was probably not adequately explained to you. I doubt it was the norm, although it sucks when it happens.

The oral was just premedication. He'd still undergo a general anesthetic using gases and a mask.
