You are right. Sometimes people get callous about this.
I have made my own blunders in taking care of people, I'll admit, but that is less than ideal--being late to your first surgery of the day.

I remember having my 6-month-old in my arms, she being the first case of the day, and the surgeon rolls in (in his BMW M5) late, meanwhile my infant is crying as I try to console her. I don't think that punctuality is too much to ask of a surgeon for the 1st case of the day.

I strive to be on time at worst, especially on a surgery day. There are times when I am called in at 2am (often for things I should not be called in for, but that is another story), and then operate in a few hours. That sucks.

In all, you make a great point.
