CB teach me how to save up for retirement.

I just graduated college and am starting my first big boy job next week. It offers 401k, full benefits, vacation, the whole sha-bang. What is the best way to invest my money and start saving for retirement. My dad says don't count on social security to help you retire. CB teach me. I've heard put in as much as possible into your 401K as well as a Roth IRA. Is that right? Help please
