The last round of layoffs left good sports coverage and writing
and reporting totally lacking at ESPN. What semblance was left is now gone. If ESPN was a joke before, it's whatever step is beyond that now.

I really haven't been to espn.com in years. I stopped following them on twitter and incorporated a few other sports sites instead. I haven't watched a single non live sport event in years.

What did they do today to change that? What's left isn't worth watching.

What I would really love to see is a network driven by sports alone. If 24 news cycles cant find enough to talk about in the whole world then sports doesn't have a prayer. Have a format something like this:

One or two magazine shows a week like Outside the Lines. I think this is a real asset to the sports world.

A format that shows sports constantly. Live sports or replayed sports. This puts a premium on the sport itself. This means you still pay a premium for the sports but have little to no overhead otherwise.

Drop sports center completely.

Have a person in studio who gives a few quick updates in between games - like if a game ends at 7:50 and the next game starts at 8 have someone who bridges the gap. Not an official show.

You can still do draft specials for the NFL and NBA and other events like that.

This is outside of all other necessities like finding other streaming options. I actually am sure this part works itself out. People will still watch sports for ever. But if ESPN doesn't watch it they won't be the vehicle people watch it on.
