1 year ago today I switched on my grid-tied self installed solar system!
According to my inverter I've produced 10,020 kWh. At my average cost of $0.115/kWh I've saved $1,152.30 in year one.
I got my expected tax returns, so my net out of pocket install cost was $3,695. 2.2 years remaining to break even, after which I will be earning 31% per year return on my initial investment.
One downside of my self install is I don't have a support contract. A couple times in the last year my inverter shut down with a warning about an arc fault. I was pretty worried about it, ended up renting a thermal camera to check for any poor connections. Eventually I found out there was a software update for my inverter that resolved some false positive issues with their arc fault detection. Since I updated I haven't had any issues.
Overall, I've been very happy with solar. I might even add a few more panels if I can find space on my roof.
