I'm really an amateur myself. Are you going to be shore or boat fishing?
Regardless you need to have patience. If you're not catching anything don't be afraid to switch spots or your tackle. Powerbait is usually good for first-timers. I find chartreuse with sparkles to be the most consistent. Gulp brand is the best of the Powerbait brands. Look for something like this http://www.cabelas.com/product/Berkley-Gulp-Trout-Dough/703736.uts?productVariantId=1291387&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=02467743&rid=20&gclid=Cj0KEQjwyZjKBRDu--WG9ayT_ZEBEiQApZBFuMRUytBC-ZOLR_yJ33l8nnpLppCsdfcU5A0Crgr7BpYaAuGi8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

Also look for trees/rocks hanging over the water. Fish love to hide in these areas. The earlier you can get on the water the better. The most active time is typically 30 minutes before and after sunrise. As the day gets warmer the fish will dive deeper so plan accordingly.
