1. It's a good sign Sione Takitaki is listed as battling for the starting spot at DE. In spite of not playing for a year and a half and missing spring ball the coaches are really high on him. His body must be in pretty good shape, which was one of my unsupported worries.
2. Multiple coaches have stated the desire to play three-deep along the DL. There are two spots along the DL that are wide open for a freshman contributor (from high school or an RM). Cody Savage, a relatively unknown walk-on, is listed as the number three DE, and Earl Tuioti-Mariner, an undersized recently-returned RM, is listed as the number three DT. I am optimistic Langi Tuifua or Lorenzo Fauatea will get meaningful PT this season.
3. In light of number two I am surprised not to see Keanu Saleapaga listed at all on the three-deep. He was injured during spring, so maybe he hasn't had a chance to showcase his skills yet.
4. While our starters at LB are stellar the backups are largely unproven, were not highly recruited, and don't seem to have the size we normally see at LB. We have three stud RMs at ILB (Will Sedgwick, Jeremiah Ieremia, Christian Folau), and I wonder if all three redshirt.
5. We have really good depth, speed, and size at CB. And all six players in the three-deep are underclassmen.
6. Chaz Ah You has a great opportunity to make some noise at Safety. At one spot the two backups are walk-ons. At the other spot you have Matt Hadley battling for a starting spot. If Chaz doesn't show well early in fall practices, I predict one of the CBs moves over to Safety.
