Now that there is a College football playoff, and the possibility of playing 15 games (if playing at Hawaii), then I think the 5,188 season passing yards is possible to be broken, but the possibility is still rather small. Keep in mind, Detmer's 5,188 passing yards is over 600 yards more than any other BYU QB ever.

If BYU made the college football playoff and advanced to the championship game, then the QB probably had a fabulous season. With 15 games, that QB would have to average 346 yards passing per game to set a new school single-season record. If there was no game at Hawaii so the total games played was 14, that number would go up to 371.

Both averages are very hard to hit, as explained in the above link, but I am willing to conceive that in a ultra special season those numbers are reached. But, it would also have to include several other "perfect storm" scenarios besides just going undefeated. Run game would have to be ancillary (I don't know if that is the right word, but I am trying to find something that is less than supplementary, throwing the ball would have to be 80% of the offense or more) to the passing game. Blowout wins would have to happen in such a way that the starters stay in long enough to get to 300+ passing yards every game. For example, Marc Wilson had his string of 9 300 yard passing games end in the 63-14 win over San Diego State because the defense provided scores and short fields that when he was pulled in the middle of the third quarter he only had 278 yards passing.
