No. It teaches us that we can't compete with elite schools.
Don't confuse the terms "P5" and "elite." In 2016, we went 3-3 against P5 schools and lost to Boise and beat Cincinnati - two P5-like schools. Our close losses were to:
- WVU (7-2 in the B12)
- Utah (5-4 in PAC)
- UCLA (2-7 in PAC, but different team after losing Rosen)
- Boise St. (6-2 in MWC)
Our P5 wins:
- Mississippi St. (3-5 in SEC)
- Michigan St. (1-8 in B1G)
- Arizona (1-8 in PAC)
- Cincinnati (1-7 in AAC)
BYU would likely have gone 4-4 or 4-5 in a P5 conference last year. Beat the bottom teams and lose to the top teams. Definition of mediocre - but still P5. Nowhere close to elite.
With OOC wins over Utah St. and SUU, we still likely go bowling.

You have to take the statement in context. The context is competing with P5 schools as an independent is not sustainable
