Was called to and served a mission 4 hours away from home as it was not a good idea for him to fly for risk of being deported. The fact that he was called to a mission like that with instructions to drive clued me in on the church's stance on this issue.
I was a pretty young YM pres with a huge group of boys here in Northern VA, so I was a bit naive to issues like these. I knew this kid since he was 8 years old and had no idea until the older YW president filled me in. Would have never known, although a lot of things make sense now, and I know of multiple other completely faithful people who are undocumented.
He just got married in the temple a few weeks ago, and it had me thinking of the YW and her family as well as the YM. How the fear of being deported to a place and a people he doesn't know can put a shadow on everything from his mission to his temple marriage.
This is a great kid, I mean that truly great kid. My standards are high when it comes to my daughters, who are still young, but I would be happy if they marry someone like him, but it would still be hard to be ok with what could potentially happen to his family. Completely changed the way I look at this issue. I can't imagine this kid getting deported somewhere he has never been.
rant over.
