In BYU's case this year it's both. You guys are unlucky that all in the same year there aren't any standout players at QB, RB, or WR, and even at some critical spots on D.

The coaches are struggling also at giving the guys who might be able to do some things the ball in the right situations.

BYU needed this season to see that they need to recruit some different types of players if that's possible given BYU's recruiting restraints.

Next year will be better. A lot of things with personnel turnover this year happened in a way that doesn't occur very often.
