Why G5 won't work for BYU and why Detmer's approach is probably best.
I remember reading an SI article in the 80's that said something like "BYU always has slow receivers that run perfect routes and catch spit in the wind and savvy, deadeyed accurate quarterbacks..."

Historically, BYU has almost always had great Olines, OK running backs, the above described receivers and usually a savvy deadeyed accurate QB (that doesn't seem to be the case lately). The defense was usually the liability because of the DB's. The main variable always seemed to be QB's. If Covey or Lindsley or Feterick, etc were QB's, BYU struggled.

BYU is struggling now, probably because of bad coaching and/or lack of talent (I don't think its scheme). Either will take time to fix, but the longer it takes the harder it will be to fix because BYU is playing close to a one sided zero-sum game with Utah, especially with regards to talent.

Ultimately, Utah benefits from anything bad that happens to BYU, and BYU is hurt by good things that happen to Utah. Sadly, the inverse is not always true.

If BYU goes G5, they will never recover from the credibility hit relative to Utah. Unlike other G5's that can make some noise now and then (Boise, SDSU, Cincinatti, Memphis, etc.) BYU's recruiting pool has a direct and viable alternative in Utah. Higher level Mormon talent will simply not choose BYU anymore.

If BYU is G5 they will become UNLV/Wyoming-esque.

I think Ty's approach is best because I think BYU can attract the talent to run a "pro-style" offense effectively (and prepare players better to go pro) which will, in turn, attract more talent etc. There is obviously a chicken/egg thing at play too.

I don't think the answer for BYU is to go to a GFGH or get too gimicky or try to be innovative (Crowton). Another Taysom Hill is not walking through the door, fans.

I dunno. I still think BYU can get the talent to at least compete with Wisconsins, etc. again, but the longer it takes to get there, the less likely it is to happen.
