We "won't" ever win the NCAA tournament

Does that mean we should always play in the NIT? I'd much rather hope for a magical independent season and know how good we were at the end of a every season. Rather than play a G5 schedule, go undefeated in a season, and never know if that team might have actually been good enough to win it all.
