How does playing in a BCS bowl help?

Beating quality teams helps. We have a greater chance to of beating quality teams as an independent during the season than as a G5 hoping to make it to a BCS bowl every year. Wisconsin may be BCS or playoff bound this year. If so, we played in a BCS bowl game this year and lost. Maybe in a future year we'll win one of those games. The more games like that we play the more we'll win.

It's a more intermediate goal that is: 1) easier to obtain than the playoff
