You've probably seen the sketch where the substitute teacher mispronounces normal names. Yeah. That was me.
I was reffing a club soccer game this weekend. The players are required to check in with the laminated player cards. I'm checking in one of the teams and it's one Hispanic name after another. I'm doing my best to not butcher these names. I don't speak much Spanish and no, I didn't speak Spanish on my mission so these aren't mission flashbacks.. So I'm dialed in on these Spanish names...
Esteban. Est-A-bahn.
Mateo. Mah-tay-o
Santiago. Sahn-tee-ah-go
Tomas. Toh-mas
Cade. Kah-day.
"Kah-day! Where is Kah-day?" The team just stares at me. This ref is insane. Oh crap. CADE. They have a white guy on their team. His name is Cade. That was embarrassing. From now on I make the Assistant Referees call out the names.
