Better without Mika?

How in the world is that possible - why would I even think that?

I am overly optimistic when it comes to BYU sports as I find it makes following more fun for me - a personal decision.

So with that in mind, trying to be optimisitc - how can we be better without Mika?

Someone mentioned in their game review how Childs will look to pass out of the post and in general if it is the right play.  He had a great night passing (1 game overreaction!) but it made me look up Mika's assist numbers last year.

Here they are broken down by # of assists and team record:

  • 3+: 7-1
  • 2: 5-2
  • 1: 7-4
  • 0: 3-5

A couple of things jumped out to me with those 4 buckets:

  • Pretty even distribution between games with 3+, 2, 1 or 0 (8, 7, 11 and 8 games respectively)
  • Almost half of our 12 losses came in games where Mika had 0 assists.
  • Games with 2+ assists we went 12-3.  Games with 1 assist or fewer we were 10-9.

I found this interesting - probably being too harsh on Mika but in trying to see a positive in losing a a 20 and 9 guy from last year it could be that we won't force feed the ball down low and when it does go down low there may be a highly chance that it comes back out leading to more open in-rythm looks.
