Fascinating history & descriptions, though. And in terms of social concerns it was often way ahead of its time--but thoroughly grounded in its time as well. It also captured a larger-than-life culture, industry & natural history tht was pretty close to its bitter end at the time. The parts I will always remember with foundness (assuming I never return for a re-read ) -- its descriptions of the last, vast whale breeding grounds; its descriptions of butchering & cleaning the two variety of great whales -- I think a Right & a Sperm whale (where Quequeg saved the Indian guy from drowning in the Sperm whale's head cavity full of oil); and the short recounted tale of the Townhowe(?) mutiny.
mutu.
