In case of Luke, they didn't understand his heart, his will, his intelligence,
and his badly needed exceptional leadership.
In the case of Payton, they don't understand his considerable skill nor a person's ability to generate the will. Size, intelligence, innate athleticism cannot be changed.
What one values, what is important to a person can motivate to increased courage and fight. One of the better recent examples is Isaac Neilson who many thought too soft to play the post (Dave Rose was one). What Rose didn't see was that Isaac had a change of heart, has worked hard, and become more aggressive and improved.
Dastrup has much more skill than Isaac with a higher ceiling. He showed a glimmer of fight vs MVSU. In Payton's case, whether or not he realizes his very considerable future potential is almost entirely a function of his own will, what he values, how determined he is to fight to become what he can become. He knows whether he will get there, we don't.
Payton needs to continue to fight as he did vs MVSU!
