Yes it is. Don’t try to fool yourself.
Taking the rivalry game aside, compare the performance of the two teams relative to other high mid to high level teams. Since going independent BYU has 1 win over a P5 team with a winning record (7-5 Georgia Tech). Byu has a couple solid wins against Boise, but otherwise they have consistently lost to top 40-50 teams. Utah isn’t elite by any means, but they’re fairly consistently a top 20-40 team now. Byu has been 50-60, and fell off a cliff this year down to ~100. I’m not trying to prop up Utah. They are a middling P5 team. It’s the same size gap between BYU and say Arizona State, Iowa, UCLA, Mississippi state etc. I don’t see BYU staying around 100 in the rankings, but I also don’t see much hope of being much better than 50-60 anytime soon. In my opinion the difference between a team that is in the 20-40 range and a team in the 50-70 is quite significant, and that is how I see the two teams now.
