My son passed away last year
in Nicaragua. Because of the challenges of getting him back to the states it took us 5 weeks to get him buried. I don't like viewings myself but I am glad we had one in his case. Most of my sons friends were not LDS and I think between the viewing and the funeral many were exposed to the teachings of the gospel in a way that will touch them the rest of their lives. The common expressions were it doesn't even look like him. Most viewings I've been to I have said the same. Without the spirit, it just isn't them. The Stake Center chapel and overflow were full mostly with non members. We have been able to talk with many of his friends about parts of the gospel as we've addressed some of their questions as they have tried to find closure. We explained that what they saw at the viewing was his body or shell, but the person that was full of life and personality was still very much alive and that this life was just a small moment and they would see him again. It helped my wife and I and his 3 brothers to see him and say goodby as well. He was 21
