My All-Time BYU Starting 5 that could beat yours
I'm choosing players based on the scenario that I have to win one game.

PG-Ainge/Jimmer
SG-Jimmer/Ainge
SF-Lee Cummard
PF-Cosic
C-Bradley

First off, I will address the elephant in the room. SF was a very difficult decision. Do I go with Devin Durrant who was an excellent scorer? How about Michael Smith who could really shoot? Fred Roberts did a little bit of everything. So why Lee Cummard?

Lee Cummard was the best of them defensively IMO. He had long arms, moved his feet and hustled. On a team with one defensive liability in Jimmer, I didn't want a second in either Durrant or Smith. Roberts was an interesting comparison, but I think Lee was a better defender and more efficient. Some stats from Lee: He was a career 43% shooter from the 3 point line. If you help off of him you are dead. His true shooting percentage was 64.6%! That is a great number. He is a good passer and a good, solid rebounder. He checks every box that I want from his position on this team. Now do I believe he had the best career out of all of the guys that could fit the SF position? No. He didn't. But in a one win scenario I will take him as my SF.

The no brainers were Ainge and Cosic for me. Both played both ends of the floor extremely well and were incredible talents with a great careers at BYU.

Jimmer's defense is the biggest single flaw on this team. I honestly thought about other possibilities (Travis Hansen playing alongside Danny Ainge sounds pretty nice), but his shooting and clutch shooting were too much to pass up.

Shawn Bradley only played one season at BYU, but he was dominant in leading us to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament with 10 blocks against Virginia in round 1. He was raw, but he could score and was an excellent defender. What better way to clean up the shots that Jimmer gives up off of the bounce? He also was an elite rebounder.

I thought briefly about Keena Young at the 4 and Cosic at the 5, but I think this lineup is more dynamic. Michael Smith or Fred Roberts certainly could also have played the 4. Why no mention of Tyler Haws? Well Haws was an expert scorer, but not an above average defensive player, rebounder or passer. Collinsworth wouldn't make this team because he can't shoot well enough. Brandon Davies and Mekeli Wesley weren't as dynamic to me as who I chose. Nemelka, Hutchins, Minson and others I believe would struggle with the length and athleticism of the players I chose.

What say ye?
