Low self esteem. Often saying that of our group of friends, he was the one who
would never be more than an hourly employee. (He was as smart as any of us and could have done what any of us were doing.) When our group of friends (4-6 of us) would get together, he'd sometimes sit on the peripheral (physically) and not engage in conversation. You could see the wheels spinning in his mind and see from his body language that he was in (emotional) pain and struggling with something. He wasn't being pouty, etc. It wasn't his nature. But, he was just sad/sullen in times when you'd think he'd have joined in the fun.
