I moved to Spokane a few years back (no longer there), but discovered just how naive I was about apples. Growing up having parents buy cheap / bargain 10 apple bags of Red Delicious or Granny's made me not really like apples all that much. But after moving to WA state, that all changed - I now crave really good apples, and I learned that there are a ton of apple types other than the ones you see in the supermarket.
A place in NE Spokane called Hansen's Orchard (awesome UPick place) grows over 70 types of apples, including Gravensteins and Honeycrisps that are becoming very popular, but my fav's remain Liberty's and Empires - easily (I like tart crisp apples). Pink Lady variations are also very good for the tart lovers. And there's nothing like picking apples off the tree, when they snap as you bite off a chunk, and the left over bitten surface of the apple is glistening wet. They're all better off the tree. Alas, many apples with the same name in the store (ie Gravensteins, Jonagolds) don't even compare when I have bought them in the supermarket, although Honeycrisps and Fuji's stay pretty good, even when picked from the grocery store bin, probably why they're gaining traction. Regardless, if you're in Spokane in the fall, go visit the Hansen's, Best apples, and totally awesome salt of the Earth people as well. Happy apple-eating!
