OR, take those 24 teams (plus Seattle)and have some relegation and promotion fun

Split the 25 teams from the WCC, MWC, and WAC (truly western teams) into 3 Conferences (CSU Bakersfield is going to the Big West in a year or two. UTRGV, UMKC and Chicago State are on their own....). Conference A is the top 8 teams; Confderence B is the next 8 teams; and Conference C is the final 9 teams.

Each Conference has its own conference schedule and plays its own conference tournament, but each team has certain cross-over games for OOC scheduling...and the Promotion games. Play the Promotions games in Las Vegas, in conjunction with the three Conference tournaments. Likely have the Confderence B and Conference C tournaments first, then play the Promotion games; then finish with the Conference A tournament heading into NCAA selection weekend.

Conferences A and B play 14 intra-conference games (7 teams x 2) and 8 cross over games against the others, factoring in geography, rivals, TV matchups, and what not. Conference C plays 16 intra-conference games (8 teams x 2) and 6 cross over games. Make the math work, but Conference A teams get more OOC home games and Conference C gets more OOC road games. The Conference games are in January and February. The cross over OOC games are played in December and perhaps 2 or 3 in January.

Based on 2017-18 performance to-date, the 2018-2019 Conferences would look like this:

CONFERENCE A (Premier West)

  • Gonzaga (13-1, 24-3)
  • Saint Mary's (13-1, 23-4)
  • New Mexico State (9-0, 22-3)
  • Nevada (10-2, 21-5)
  • Boise State (10-3, 20-5)
  • BYU (9-5, 20-7)
  • #7 TBD
  • #8 TBD

Conference A Promotion Games:

Fresno State (7-5, 17-8) v. Utah Valley (6-3, 17-8)

UNLV (7-5, 18-7) v Seattle (6-3, 17-9)

Winners go to Conference A, losers go to Conference B

CONFERENCE B (Champions West)

  • Utah Valley (6-3, 17-8) or Fresno State (7-5, 17-8) [loser of Conference A Promotion game]
  • Seattle (6-3, 17-9) or UNLV (7-5, 18-7) [loser of Conference A Promotion game]
  • Grand Canyon (6-4, 17-9)
  • Wyoming (7-5,16-9)
  • Utah State (7-6, 14-12)
  • New Mexico (7-6, 12-14)
  • #7 TBD
  • #8 TBD

Conference B Promotion Games

San Diego (7-7, 16-10) v. San Diego State (5-7, 13-10)

Pacific (8-6, 13-14) v San Francisco (6-8, 14-13)

Winners go to Conference B, losers go to Conference C

CONFERENCE C (Mountain West)

  • San Diego (7-7, 16-10) or San Diego State (5-7, 13-10) [loser of Division B Promotion game]
  • Pacific (8-6, 13-14) v San Francisco (6-8, 14-13) [loser of Division B Promotion game]
  • Air Force (4-7, 10-13)
  • Santa Clara (6-8, 9-17)
  • Colorado State (4-10, 11-16)
  • Portland (4-10, 10-17)
  • Loyola Marymount (3-11, 8-17)
  • Pepperdine (1-13, 8-17)
  • San Jose State (0-12, 3-20)

Then, each year, the top 2 from the lower division play the bottom 2 from the higher division in Promotion games.

Each Division still constitutes an official NCAA conference, so each get an autobid to the NCAA tournament.

So, as part of Conference A (the Premier West Conference), BYU's 2018-19 schedule would look something like this:

Division A "conference" games:

  • Home: Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, New Mexico State, Nevada, Boise State, UNLV, Fresno State
  • RoadGonzaga, Saint Mary's, New Mexico State, Nevada, Boise State, UNLV, Fresno State

Division B/C "OOC" games:

  • Home: Utah Valley (B), Utah State (B), New Mexico (B), Colorado State (C), Pepperdine (C)
  • Road: San Diego State (B), Grand Canyon (B), Pacific (B)
