I second this. Stick with something smaller at first. Be sure to avoid the race models. They are so fun to ride but they sure get going quickly and will simply be too much for the inexperienced rider. I grew up riding a Yamaha TTR 125. Great starter bike. Honda's CRF 230 is also a great starter.
