Adam, who is a generally savvy guy, said that he always used to pronounce the word "hy-bred" rather than "hy-brid" — his theory is that most people are like him and that they mistakenly assumed that the word was "hybred" because it involved breeding things together (maybe he even thought it was "highbred"). He reasons that it was only when car manufacturers started slapping the word "hybrid" on millions of vehicles that people realized the proper way the word was spelled.
My take? Very few people other than him ever had that misunderstanding of how the word was spelled. Even really bright people have their own misunderstandings that they come to realize were in error much later than the rest of the public at large.
Will anyone else admit to being in the Adam Carolla camp on the word "hybrid"?
