Probably because they know who is LDS. A lot harder for BYU to know that
at least short of making questionable use of church records to cross reference worldwide records with HS recruiting databases and HS basketball rosters/stats.
Whether we like it or not the LDS player will remain the core of our roster so knowing who is LDS in North Dakota, NY, FL, etc. is important. A referral from a stake president saying someone in their stake is 6-11 or is a guard hitting 45% of their 3's is pretty important information if the kid had no prior BYU connection.
