prowess in getting behind the D to reel in copious deep balls. The local media will adopt and advance the nickname and praise the blazing speed and skill of the WR, dazzling us with reports of 50 yrd completions and acrobatic catches in practice.
Then the seasons starts in the fall, and once again see we’ll a mediocre WR corps that fails to stretch the field, lacks swagger and does not consistently get open. Frustrated that we’ve been blinded by the hype again, we’ll come to CB and ask “What happened to the Bomb Squad?” and “Why didn’t the staff look to the JC ranks to find some guys that can play WR?”. Thus the cycle continues.
The offseason hype in Provo is crazy, and it happens year in and year out, regardless of what’s going on in the program. I guess the media guys think it’s a way to protect job security? Seems like we only have two choices for BYU media coverage:
1) Blue kool aid connoisseurs: Fowler, Wrubell, BYUSN guys, Harmon, Gurney, etc
2) BYU bashers: Monson, kinahan, Drew, etc
Where are guys we can trust with a more objective report? Criddle sometimes. Who are the others?
Makes me appreciate LaVells classic response: “We have a chance to be pretty good this year”. No hype.
