We've had 2 seasons since then...
And 1 season was pretty dang good. Just accept the fact that Independence is struggling, and it's not a 1 season trend. It's been trending downward since it began. Our attendance in November is honestly ridiculous compared to when we were in the MWC, and that's if you remove the Utah game.
There is very little positive going Independent... very little. If there was anything greatly positive about it, more teams would do it. NCAA Football is meant to be played in a conference, like it or not... it's the truth. We built our reputation on playing in a very weak conference and dominating it.
The AAC isn't a step down for BYU at all, call it a lateral move if you want, but I believe it actually is a step up for the program and all other sports.

Why would their opponents agree to just let them out of major 7 figure contracts for any dumb reason?

Not sure, but the data is cherry picked for sure. Ignores the uninspiring 2016 and disastrous 2017 seasons
