the people weren't talking about p5s and g5s (fan since 1979). It is true that nationally BYU got more relevant attention when they beat the Pitts or Mizzous, but it was the massive number of wins put them on the national radar. I would go to games without caring who they played. #13 Penn State came on Halloween while I was in college — and BYU beat them soundly. That victory was exciting, but didn't feel much better than the conference wins.
It wasn't until the wealthier conferences wanted to make a more prenounced distiction between the haves and have-nots with the BCS that SOS became a big deal. The college playoffs and p5 labeling has further pushed the perceived wedge between the conferences.
