Huh. My experience is if you check at the gate, you pickup at the carousel.

That alone is not worth checking it. Not to mention that my carryon often has things in it I don't want thrown around or sitting out on the tarmac in the rain.

My home airport is Oakland, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it takes 30 minutes for bags to come out after arrival.
