You're conflating two things here: what the rule should be (i.e. the topic we're
discussing in this thread), and following rules. No one is saying that kids shouldn't follow rules, or at least I'm not — this is not the debate.
The issue is whether or not BYU should have a rule banning beards or facial hair. If recruiting/interviewing is the only reason, then this is a terrible reason.
If you're saying that silly or nonsensical rules should be established just so that young people learn to obey rules, then that is an even worse reason — there are already plenty of real, legitimate rules for LDS youth to follow; there's no need to compound it with silly stuff.
