The athletic department is tasked of cutting costs by $1.9M by reducing the number of sports and to find additional $500,000,each year. It received a $4.7M loan from the university to eliminate its accumulated operating deficit. Beginning in fiscal 2020, the department must make annual payment of nearly $500,000 to eliminate the obligation by 2029. The regents, and particularly the UNM president, do not foresee the revenue stream increasing enough to cancel the reduction of sports. UNM sanctions 22 sports; the MWC average is around 18.
Which sports and how many will be decided later. Any cuts would not be effective until July, 2019.
