I’m an engineer. I feel like I’m underpaid. I have a couple anesthesiologist
friends that I make much more than me, and I don’t think it’s fair.

I understand that they did a bit of training. But so did I! They didn’t have to work as hard as I did in undergrad. They walked around with notecards memorizing some stuff... big deal! I have to design a working micro-controller! I spent days and nights in that CADM lab in the Clyde building (which can also be classified as the island of socially awkward guys). At least they had the option of interacting with actual females while they quizzed each other with their notecards.

Yes, they had to go to medical school, but I did a Master’s as well! That’s pretty much equivalent.

They had to do a residency to specialize in anesthesia... big deal, they worked lots of hours and got a measly stipend out of it. Sounds a lot like my first job at Intel... it was a sweatshop!

The way I see it, it’s not fair that they pull down around a half million per year and I don’t! I worked just as hard as they did, but I don’t have a clear path to make their money.

Plus, what do they really do? Inject some fluids into an IV, then hold a mask over someone’s face for a few seconds? Then they get to kick back and relax for an hour or two until the surgery is over! I guess I get distracted and browse CB from time to time... so I guess we’re on equal footing there.

It just seems unfair that anesthesiologists are valued so highly in our society while the poor engineering schmucks are left out in the cold! Imagine what his life would be like if he didn’t have all of those instruments (designed by engineers) to help him with his job!

If it weren’t for us engineers, all of you out there would be unproductive, inefficient and still in the dark ages.

It’s time that society recognizes the true contributions we’ve made, and start paying us like we think we should be paid!
