Called most vulgar cuss words on not a daily basis but hourly. Threatened with being thrown from top floor of building we were working on.

One job I got was sweeping out the underground MTC tunnel. Super came to check on me. I was busy sweeping. He sprints over and screams, "you are moving too slow. " He grabs the broom out of my hand and shoves me screaming "like this!" and starts sweeping back and forth as fast as he can kicking up a cloud of dust in the tunnel.

I volunteered for an overnight concrete pour trying to prove my worth. I hustled all night. At one point I was working the concrete vibrator that helps the concrete settle and fill pockets. One If the crew runs over and grabs it out of my hand and pushes me down into the wet concrete and says, "you are not doing it right you --------- idiot. " At the end of the shift, I cleaned all tools. Most everyone was gone, and I waited to be released. The super saw me standing there while he talked to one of his crew and lost his mind. He came running over to me screaming "what the ---- are you doing standing around? Are the tools clean?" When I said yes, everything was clean and put away, his rage exploded. He bent down and picked some wet concrete that had spilled over the forms and threw it in my face while screaming, "then pick this ---- up!" Some of the concrete got in my eye causing a burn.

And that was it. I quit on the spot. There were about two dozen BYU student summer laborers and only one lasted. All the construction guys HATED the BYU kids. I lasted more than most. There were maybe 5 laborers left when I quit about 2/3 through the summer.

I had worked a couple laborer and heavy assembly and furniture moving jobs before that. Those were good experiences. Layton was pure abuse. I will say that summer got me locked in on that last year of school. 🙂
