The discussion thread was about whether soccer had surpassed hockey in the USA. This in response to Colin Cowherd's pronouncement that soccer had surpassed hockey in the Big 4 in the US. Many of the posting hockey fans were dual fans of hockey and soccer. The prevailing opinion was that of course the NHL -being the best hockey league in the world, the flagship - was still significantly ahead of MLS. But in general terms, in most ways and most metrics, soccer had indeed surpassed hockey. And then there was this prevailing opinion : Going forward, soccer would easily surpass hockey in the U.S, and would do so with the force and scale of an avalanche.
