Agree that Barnum was a much more complicated person in real life, and probably
wasn't as warm-hearted towards the circus "freaks" as portrayed in the movie. Ultimately, he just wanted to make money, and it seems like the real-life Barnum was pretty open and honest about that.
On the other hand, it's always difficult to evaluate because we project our 2018 morals and standards on people living over 100 years ago, which is never going to be a fair assessment of anyone.
