I am very sympathetic towards students nowadays with huge debt, but I still feel
that part of the problem is people not taking responsibility for their own actions. Obviously that recent story about the Utah orthodontist from USC with $1 million in loans is an extreme example, but even watching this short video, it shocks me to see the young people with over $100,000 in debt just from getting an undergrad degree. Why would you sign up for that? Did you consider that you might actually have to pay off that enormous loan eventually? One kid in this video says he is being punished for getting an education, but I would guess his enrollment in college was entirely voluntary.

Certainly the current system isn't friendly towards college students - and that is not their fault - but they also need to do some planning and thinking for themselves, and take some responsibility for their decisions.
