I have pulled two kids out of pools and the way you described it is exactly
right. There was no flailing, thrashing or any sound. Just the child trying to reach to the top of the pool, which would have resulted in a drowning. Both were in private pools. One time was when I turned my head and there were several of us in the pool and my three year old ventured off the steps. The other time, the parents weren't in the pool but were talking with friends and assumed that he would stay in the shallow end, I was there but with my kids, I had been facing the other way for a while and but saw him when I turned around and was able to pull him out. In both instances there was no splash, no sound, nothing except the fact that I saw them vertical in the pool, completely submersed. You have to be vigilant, always.
