The church is too interwoven into the identity of the school and thus the football program. It would feel too much like hiring an actor instead of the real thing; like having a spokesperson that doesn't really use the product being sold (no, these aren't perfect comparisons). Sure, may get results on the field, but deep down I want to have my cake and eat it too--a person who embodies at that BYU is about and is successful. It's happened, it will happen again.
