Lol, BYU's athletic history was not superior. The more recent history, which

was far more important, heavily favored Utah. In the preceeding decade Utah had produced 2 of the best football teams the state had ever seen, 2 #1 draft picks, and ranked highly for active NFL players.

Ultimately, the PAC has been proven right. Once Utah got full revenue sharing they went on to 3 straight top 25 seasons in football and 2 straight in basketball. CU won the South and had a few good basketball teams.

BYU has trended down for the most part this decade. They haven't beaten a top 25 team in football in almost 10 years.

BYU has a larger fan base but their advertising value gets overstated. Some of the top sports advertisers have limited value marketing to BYU fans.
