For what it is worth regarding BYU admissions
I have connections to a General Authority (father of my BIL). He told my sister that there is a directive to not admit every "perfect" candidate at BYU. They do not want thousands of the same thing (32+ ACT and 4.0 GPA) in Provo. They want some of these high achievers to branch out and represent the Church in other schools (think Ivy League and other elite universities).

For what it is worth, this particular GA had a very well qualified grandson not get accepted, before or after his mission. RM and his parents were astonished and upset. This GA approached a contact on the admissions committee to ask what more his grandson could do and was told that there is no perfect formula anymore. He was told to advise his grandson to apply to good schools and to represent the Church faithfully. His non-acceptance was no reflection of his qualification or ability to succeed.

Also talked to a member of the admissions committee a few weeks ago and was told that this past year GPA factored as the 8th or 9th criteria for incoming freshmen. They are looking for other things. And in some cases it isn't "well rounded" perfection, but passion/drive in one specific area of life.

Take all of it for what it is worth. There are no guarantees any more. Lots of good, qualified, and talented kids out there.
