If you want to point to one single event

then I think the Church's role in promoting the passage of Proposition 8, which sought to stop gay marriage in California, was a major factor. This would have been a definite sore spot with liberal university leaders. That happened in 2008. The Utes were invited to join the PAC 12 in 2010.
