I was excited for the hire of Kalani. Why? Several reasons:
(1) I thought there would be a large uptick in getting those 4- or 5-star polynesian and other minority recruits that had eluded BYU in the past. Guys like Jay Tufele, Faatui Tuitele, Siaki Ika, Brandon Kaho. After a couple of years, it is clear that Kalani has had little, if any, better track record than Bronco in that regard.
(2) Kalani bleeds blue. I loved that he was such a diehard BYU fan. However, it seems that in surrounding himself with similar guys, he ignored major flaws in coaching, schemes, and team culture.
(3) Kalani was supposedly a defensive mastermind who helped, and learned from, Kyle Whittingham. Our defense has looked worse than under Bronco.
All in all, I'm a bit disappointed with how he has managed the team. It seems like he does not have a clear vision for what he wants. And it seems like the core competencies of the "value add" that Kalani was supposed to bring he has underperformed in all areas. Here's to hoping he turns it around, and hoping that Oregon State wasn't our best indicator of what we can expect from the BYU football team with him at the helm.
