Other than the two picks I didn’t see a lot of fault with Tanner’s play against Cal. I outlined the first half mistakes by others in a previous post. Now having watched the 2nd half too, I can primarily blame the OL. We failed on two third and shorts due to misblocks, one by Hoty and one by everyone on the line. The Hoty one on the first series of the 2nd half was particularly bad as he tried to cut a DL on third and two and completely whiffed and let him in the backfield for a tackle. Not sure why he tried a cut block when we needed two yards. Got to engage and push back. I’m not buying that this guy is an nfl lineman. Too many mistakes the past two years.

Hoge was late to get out and engage on the TE screen near midfield on another series and we punted. Has he made the block, there was a chance at the first down even though we probable wouldn’t have made it the full 8 yards needed, it would have set up 4th and short. Not sold on the play call there when we need a full 8 yards.

There was another series after the punt nuff where we had a 2nd and 5 at the ten and Empey whiffed on the block and it was a TFL. Defender made a good upfield move so it wasn’t an easy block. Then the penalty on wr screen blocking down the field moved us back more. Then on the third and long they rolled Tanner out to his left under pressure and he threw the pick. That offsrm rollout has been tried and not worked this year. Tanner doesn’t throw well moving to his left.

Mangum scramble INT to Akile down the field was a poor throw by him. Aikle had a step and ball was under thrown. Shumway was also wide open underneath middle.

Some of ol need game experience and there will continue to be some highs and lows. If mistakes continue, Ol needs to consider replacements as well if guys continue to whiff on blocks.
