I have seen this song and dance before. BYU football 2002-2004. QB play was inconsistent and poor. But better than what we have right now, which is a huge indictment on Tanner.
BYU needs a QB that is efficient throwing the ball. Completion percentage in the mid 60s%, and a ypa above 7.0, but closer to 8.0 if possible. With only 30 pass attempts per game, that puts a BYU QB at 240 yards passing per game, which is really just solid, not spectacular. Basically, something like USU's Jordan Love. He is the #49 rated QB in the NCAA at 144.4 PER. Love is a 66.2% Passer, averages 247 yards per game, and averages 7.6 yards per passing attempt. And let me repeat, he is the #49 rated PER QB in the NCAA. So above average, but not top 25 or anything. Just a solid QB. And this as a sophomore who played last year as a freshman. He was #88 in 2017 at 119.3 as a freshman, still better than the last 2 years with Mangum.
in 2017 for 8 games, Tanner's 110.8 PER was the #100(approx) QB in the NCAA out of 122. 57.2% Completions. 192.5 Yards per game. 6.0 yards per attempts passing average
In 2018 for 6 games, Tanner's 115.4 PER is the #109 QB in the NCAA our of 122. 61.5% Completion percentage. 173.6 yards per game average passing. 5.7 yards per attempt passing average.
We know what Tanner is. He is a subpar NCAA QB passing the ball. He is not efficient, which means the team has trouble scoring TDs. which it does with him. His YPA for both years shows a huge inability to get chunk yard plays in the passing game, which is the reality with him. We struggle to find the end zone with Mangum.
And before you say, BUT 2015, his PER that year was 136. Still not great, but closer to what BYU needs, but he has not been able to deliver. BYU needs 140 PER or above to really compete. Efficient QB play has to happen at BYU. It has to. And it isn't right now.
Time to see what Wilson can do now. Mangum just hasn't played well enough to earn the right to keep his job as a starter.
